Slip! Slop! Slap! Is an iconic sun protection campaign,
which was more recognized in Australia in the 80’s. The Cancer Council Victoria
launched it in 1981. They are a non-profit organization that aims to fight and
reduce the impact of cancer in Victoria. Basically the commercial represents Slip for slip on a shirt, Slop on sunscreen, and then Slap on a hat. Another interesting fact
about the sunscreen was that they also used the campaign in New Zealand, but
instead of a duck or whatever animal it is, they use a lobster. They made this
commercial so that they can get the consumers or kids more interested in
protecting their skin. The website
stated, “No tan is worth
dying for” it tells you the disadvantages of tanning and being in the
sun. Here is another quote from the stating some facts from the first quote “Pending
an outright ban on solariums in Victoria, we call for further tightening and
strengthening of the legislation to prohibit deals like this one which appeal
to image-conscious, cash-poor young people, along with stricter enforcement and
monitoring.”
Through the years they came out with a couple additions
to the slip, slop, and slap. They are seek and slide. Seek being shade and Slide
for sliding your sunglasses on. The website continues to spread the use of
slip, slop, slap. They really care about the people and they want to make sure
that everyone playing outside in the sun is happy, healthy, and safe. They also
give a couple of instructions on the website about who they are, why they made
the commercial, and what their overall goal is. The thing about the campaign is
that they heavily advertise this is Australia, and not so much America or
anywhere else in the country. Basically this is what their mission statement
is, “Minimise the threat of cancer to Australians, through
successful prevention, best treatment and support.” If they want to become more popular
around the world, they should heavily focus on other target markets.
